The FDA strongly discourages the use of cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and marijuana in any form during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Cannabis and cannabis-derived products have become increasingly available in recent years, with new and different types of products appearing all the time. However, it is not recommended to take CBD for any of these reasons. The FDA urges women not to use cannabis or any type of CBD product while pregnant or breastfeeding, as it could be dangerous for both mother and baby.
Since the perceived benefits of CBD oil are so well aligned with the postpartum period, it is understandable that it is not considered safe for use while breastfeeding. The FDA plans to learn more about the effects of CBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding, such as whether and to what extent the presence of CBD in breast milk harms a breastfed baby or breast milk production. Many first-time mothers consider CBD products to be a gentle, naturally occurring compound for their well-being. CBD oil is becoming increasingly popular for a variety of problems, from pain relief, the suppression of nausea and anxiety to a restful night's sleep.
While CBD oil is generally considered safe for most adults, there is some controversy surrounding its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is limited research on its effects on breastfeeding mothers and their babies, so it is best to be cautious and avoid using it while breastfeeding. Research has shown that traces of CBD can be found in breast milk and, in addition to all the unknown risks associated with it, there is also “the possibility of CBD products being contaminated with pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, fungi, etc. Because of this risk of contamination and the general lack of data, experts such as the FDA, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (The CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) products containing CBD (including marijuana) are discouraged from using CBD and other types of cannabis while breastfeeding.
